A TREE FELL… Now what ?
When a tree falls on your property, whether it's your own tree or your neighbor's tree, the coverage and responsibility for damages can vary depending on the circumstances and your insurance policy.
When a tree falls on your property and damages your home or other structures like a fence, your home policy will usually pay to remove the tree and repair/replace the damaged structures up to the policy limits. However, if a tree falls and does not damage any structure, you may have to remove the tree yourself unless you have added coverage for tree removal.
If you have many trees on your property, call your agent and ensure you have all the additional coverage needed to remove trees!
If your neighbor's tree falls on your property, your insurance company would most likely be the company to pay the damages unless your neighbor was negligent. Usually, falling trees are just due to storms and heavy wind; there's no negligence. Your policy would cover your damage, and their policy would cover theirs.
If a tree falls on a car, it's not your home policy that would pay. It's your auto insurance policy! Be sure to carry COMPREHENSIVE coverage on your auto policy if you like to park under or near trees.
In either case, it's essential to contact your insurance agent as soon as possible to report the incident and determine the extent of your damage. In my agency, we guide our clients through the claims process and provide assistance in dealing with any potential issues with claims.
